It sometimes surprises us how people don't make use of the obvious marketing tools that are out there. Email marketing is (in our opinion) one of the most underused forms of marketing. It's cost effective, easy and adaptable. Want to upsell something? Create brand awareness? Generate new customers? Get rid of old stock? Use email marketing.

Mistakes that people make.
  • Not making use of their established channels to increase signups. This might include website signup forms, social media and advertising avenues.
  • Not sending out enough emails. Constant contact is the key here.
  • Sending out too many emails. Nobody wants to feel harassed.
  • Sending out spammy or poorly made emails. If you have an open rate of less than 15% or click rate of less than 1.5%, you're in trouble.

How to fix this.
  • Use an email marketing platform or service that can be easily integrated across various channels, and use it.
  • Have your emails professionally designed and content written well.
  • Send out one email a week. No more. No less.
  • Make sure you use images in your emails. And don't forget a strong CTA (remember this lesson from last week).
  • Tell people something they want to know. In our case, people want advice on improving their marketing. What do they want from you? Sales? Specials? Competitions?
  • Comply with the law. Don't send out spammy emails or emails that they can't opt out of.
