BP's Logo Cost a Staggering $221 million!

How is such a thing possible, you ask? Well, BP didn't just pay for a freelance graphic designer to sit for a couple of hours and create some cool designs. If that were the case, he (or she) would be the richest designer in the history of design stuff. Ever.

In 2001, BP commissioned Landor Associates and Ogilvy & Mathers to create a new brand identity to replace their existing Green Shield design. The chosen Helios design represents the various forms of energy coming together and makes use of the tagline "Beyond Petroleum".

So why the astronomical cost? Landor Associates has created some of the most famous brands in the world today, all at large expense. They make use of extensive research teams to gauge the ideas that people will respond to the most. From colours, to fonts and designs, everything is carefully planned. Sometimes hundreds of variations are generated to sample. The branding goes further than just a logo design though, with brand position carefully considered and strategy taken into account, the brand is taken through every possible iteration before being decided upon.
